Exhibition “brenne und sei dankbar“

Even in the cultured nation of Germany, market economic principles increasingly constrain cultural activities. There is pressure to increase capacity and efficiency with less and less money. The consequences for art and cultural producers are fatal. The continually worsening working and living conditions for artists are held up as an example of the increasing flexibility of labour markets and society in general – art has a dubious leading role here.

The exhibition “brenne und sei dankbar“ (Burn and be grateful) examines existential aspects of the cultural-political situation of independent dance and theatre makers in Germany, based on the results of the Performing Arts Report (Fonds Darstellende Künste e.V., 2010).

Actress and director Gesche Piening and mixed media artist Ralph Drechsel developed and realized the exhibition “brenne und sei dankbar“ as part of the arts project TESTSET – www.testset.org. TESTSET examines the principle of theatre in varying formats by violating the boundaries between cultural productions and artefacts. The “principle theatre“ is central, whether on or off the stage.

Sponsored by Kulturreferat der Landeshauptstadt München, ver.di-Bundesvorstand – Fachgruppe Theater und Bühnen – and Fonds Darstellende Künste e.V. Supported by Akademie der Künste, Berlin and Bundesverband Freier Theater e.V. (BuFT).

The exhibition was shown at Akademie der Künste, Berlin, Theaterfestival »150% made in Hamburg«, LOFFT – Leipziger Off-Theater, DANCE 2012 – Internationales Festival für zeitgenössischen Tanz München, Schwankhalle Bremen, Werkhaus Südbahnhof Krefeld, Tafelhalle Nürnberg, Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Kampnagel Hamburg, Theaterhaus Stuttgart, Gängeviertel Hamburg, Theaterfestival »Kaltstart« Hamburg, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt a.M. and other locations.
